This is the only variation of the two setups. Once I removed this, and plugged my dongle back in, the issue went away. (I have tried to remove dongle, and plug back in, also move closer to my keyboard and mouse (was 14 inches away). It seems like the issue may be related to the usb ports being under powered or over utilized. Anyway, unplugging my external drive fixed the issue for me.
Thanks but I do have the latest MS 64-bit drivers installed, and I have tried moving the keyboard to a different port. I am finding that the problem is getting worse, and is actually now affecting my mouse also. I have a logitech mouse which has the scroll button set to activate the 'CTRL' key, and it stops working when the Keyboard stops working. If I switch to another program, the settings work again. It's as though it's not specific to the drivers for the KB & mouse but perhaps something deeper - in the Bios maybe? Thanks for reading this!! Darryl Gittins Darryl Gittins.

Kurt - no, your suggestion was super specific - from someone who has used the MS Ergonomic Keyboard and who has used the Intellitype software before. My Adesso keyboard did not have an FLOCK function and I didn't have experience in this area - there were no instructions anywhere I saw about how to set the FLOCK - plus mine is reversed to boot. Sure the other responses was well intentioned and appreciated (though the other one was a little snarky and dismissive of everything Microsoft - which I can sympathize with but didn't answer my question) - but your response was ++very helpful++ because you have experience with the specific problem I am asking about. 
A response of 'uninstall and reinstall the software' and 'repair permissions' is of course accurate but does not address the issue at hand.
